WSU Can't Capitalize In 3-1 Loss Sacramento State

May 9, 2004

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State's Aaron MacKenzie allowed only two runs in eight innings, but the Cougars couldn't execute offensively as they lost to Sacramento State 3-1 in a non-conference baseball game Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

'Yesterday the key to the win was our execution, but today it was a lack of execution that determined the outcome,' WSU Head Coach Tim Mooney said. 'MacKenzie pitched extremely well. Today was his best outing in his last four starts. It is a shame we wasted it with poor hitting execution.'

MacKenzie (5-6) took the loss for WSU (24-20), pitching the first eight innings, while allowing only four hits and two runs, all earned. He also struck out seven Hornets. Brandon Hundt and Wayne Daman Jr. also pitched for WSU in the ninth.

Sacramento State's (26-31) starting pitcher Ethan Katz (8-5) earned the win, pitching seven innings, allowing eight hits and the only Cougar run in the second, which was earned. Mick Joyce recorded the save by pitching the final inning of the game, allowing no hits.

WSU took a 1-0 lead in the second with a single up the middle by Jeremy Farrar that scored Zach McAngus, who had doubled down the left field line.

The Hornets tied the game 1-1 in the fourth inning when Jack Arroyo stole home after reaching base on a walk. Arroyo advanced to second with a sacrifice bunt and stole third.

Sacramento State took the lead for good in the fifth inning when Pedro Santiago, who singled to lead off the inning, scored when Bret LeVier singled three batters later.

WSU had a bases loaded, one out opportunity in the fifth, but couldn't execute as Jay Miller struck out swinging and Grant Richardson grounded out. The visitors used three double plays to eliminate WSU scoring threats, threw out one Cougar runner at the plate and another trying to stretch a double into a triple.

The visitors added their final run of the game in the ninth to finalize the score 3-1. Ryan Browne drove home Ronnie Machado Jr., with a single following Machado's base hit to lead off the inning, a passed ball and a ground out.

The Cougars will face Sacramento State for the finale of the three-game non-conference series Sunday at 11:00 a.m. at Bailey-Brayton Field.
