Bears Earn NCAA Regional Bid

May 10, 2004

BERKELEY - Cal's 19th-ranked men's golf team has earned an invitation to the NCAA West Regional and will begin competition May 20 at the Crosswater Club in Sunriver, Ore.

The Golden Bears are seeded sixth in the 27-team field and are making their 11th regional appearance. The regional tournament concludes May 22, and the top 10 teams will advance to the championship finals June 1-4 at Cascades Golf Course in Hot Springs, Va.

Cal, which gained a regional bid for the eighth consecutive year, will be looking to reach the national rounds for the first time since 2000. Overall, the Bears have qualified for the championship finals five times.

Cal is joined by six other Pac-10 schools in the West Regional field - UCLA, Arizona State, Arizona, USC, Washington and Stanford. The entire NCAA field includes 27 teams in both East and Central regional sites.

Although beset by injuries the last month, Cal appears to be in its healthiest state since early in the season. First team All-Pac-10 senior Peter Tomasulo, after being out with a wrist injury, returned for the Pac-10 championships in late April and finished 11th. In addition, senior Scott Carlyle is expected to be in the lineup after missing several tournaments with a back injury.

Senior Jesse Ruda was Cal's top finisher at Pac-10's, tying for seventh place - his best finish of the year. Junior Jeff Hood, a second team All-Pac-10 choice, was 33rd at the conference tournament.
