WSU Takes Series With Run In Ninth, Beating Sacramento State 6-5

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State starting pitcher Garrett Alwert allowed five runs over 8.1 innings and Bryce Chamberlin picked up the win as WSU pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to collect a 6-5 victory over visiting Sacramento State Monday in a non-conference baseball game at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Pinch runner J.J. Burress scored the game-winning run on the second of two costly Hornet errors. Chamberlin (7-1) made his pitching return after suffering a broken jaw April 16 and recorded the final out in the top of the ninth.

WSU's (25-20), Alwert pitched the majority of the game, allowing 12 hits, five runs, four earned, while striking out seven batters.

Relief pitcher, Mick Joyce (0-3) took the loss for the Hornets (26-32), pitching the final two outs while allowing one run, unearned, and one walk. Starter Andy Mohr worked 7.2 innings, allowing 11 hits and five runs, all earned.

The game went back and forth between the two teams, both scoring two runs in the first and single runs in the fourth before WSU scored two runs in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead. The Hornets answered with a single run in the seventh and then tied the score in the ninth with a sacrifice fly by Craig Johnson that scored Ronnie Machado Jr.

Following two singles and a sacrifice bunt Sacramento State scored two runs in the first with a single by Pedro Santiago driving home Johnson and Jack Arroyo.

WSU's Jay Miller drove home Jason Freeman with a double and then scored on a fielder's choice by Justin Hart to tie the game 2-2 in WSU's half of the first inning.

The Hornets regained the lead in the fourth with a sacrifice fly by Bret LeVier that scored Santiago following two singles and a sacrifice bunt.

The Cougars answered with a single run to tie the game 3-3 in the fourth when, with two outs, Brandon Reddinger doubled to score Zach Kosturos.

Following three singles, Grant Richardson drove home Kaeo Rubin with a sacrifice fly in the fifth to give the Cougars their first lead of the game. Hart then drove home Freeman with a fielder's choice ground out to second to give WSU a 5-3 lead.

CSUS chipped away at the Cougar lead with single run in the seventh when John Acha sacrifice fly scored Machado Jr., who reached on a WSU error.

WSU will return to action Friday at 6 p.m. at UCLA in the first of a three-game Pacific-10 Conference series.
