Cal Baseball Loses 6-5 Heartbreaker at San Diego State
May 11, 2004
SAN DIEGO, CA - With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Cal reliever Jesse Ingram gave up a RBI triple to San Diego State's Josh Hill, followed by the game-winning single to Jordan Swydan, as the Golden Bears fell, 6-5, Tuesday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium in San Diego. Cal goes to 24-28 overall and the Aztecs improved to 28-26.
Ingram (0-3, 1.3 innings, four hits, two runs, one walk, two strikeouts) was two outs away from earning what would have been a school-record 10th save of the season. However, after striking out Jake Mclintock to start the bottom of the ninth inning, he allowed a single up the middle by Lance Zawadzki. Then with Sam Pepper pinch running, Hill slammed a triple to center field, tying the game, 5-5. With Hill on third, Swaydan won the game with a run-scoring single to the Bears' shortstop Jeff Dragicevich.
The winning pitcher for San Diego State was reliever Joey Pace (1-0, 1.0 inning, one hit, two strikeouts), who had thrown the top of the ninth inning.
The letdown in the bottom of the ninth was disappointing for Cal as it had played well up to that point. The Bears had broken a 4-4 tie in the top of the eighth inning when junior second baseman Matt Einspahr had a two-out singled to center field, scoring sophomore pinch hitter Jeremy Burchett, who came off the bench to hit a double to left-center field.
Cal had scored four runs in the first two innings off of Aztec starter Brett Douglas. In the first inning, senior center fielder David Weiner had a sacrifice fly and freshman catcher Garrett Bussiere had a RBI triple. In the second, junior third baseman David Nicholson had a two-run single with the bases loaded. San Diego State countered by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first and single runs in the fourth and sixth innings (solo homer by Curt Mendoza) off of Bear starter Adam Gold (5.7 innings, eight hits, three earned runs, four walks, two strikeouts).
Cal was led at the plate by Nicholson (4-for-5, two RBI), Einspahr (3-for-4, RBI) and Bussiere (2-for-5, triple, RBI).
The Bears next play at the University of San Diego, Wednesday, May 12 at 3 p.m. at Cunningham Stadium.
San Diego State: Mendoza, solo home run in the sixth inning.
