Gilmour Advances In U.S. Open Qualifier

May 11, 2004

CORVALLIS, Ore.- - Freshman Ryan Gilmour shot a 4-under 68 Monday at Trysting Tree Golf Club to advance to sectional qualifying for the U.S. Open. The sectionals will take place at the Crosswater Course in Sunriver, Ore. on June 7, where the top two players will advance, depending on the number of entrants.

Gilmour prevailed in a six-man playoff that also included junior Brad Simpson and sophomore Brian Kelley. The playoff started on the first hole with a last two standing format. Simpson bogeyed the first hole, leaving five men left on the second hole. Gilmour hit his tee shot on the second into a bush and had to take a penalty stroke for an unplayable lie, but was able to sink an eight-footer for par and move on. Two players (including Kelley) bogeyed the third, leaving three players left going to the fourth. Finally, Gilmour sank a 30-footer on the par-3 fourth to earn him a qualifying spot.

Kelley and Simpson are the third and fourth alternates, respectively.

Freshman Jay Ross and junior Cameron MacKenzie also fired rounds under par. Ross finished with a 3-under 69 and MacKenzie with a 2-under 70.

OSU head coach Brian Watts also participated in Monday's qualifier. He shot a 5-over 77 and did not qualify, but he had some comments on his players:

'For the guys to get that experience of playing with professionals who have been out on the tour is great,' said Watts. 'Our guys competed well in a pressure situation - our top five finishers were 17-under par.

'The course was in phenomenal condition. The folks at Trysting Tree did a great job to get it ready.'

The U.S. Open takes place June 14-20 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, NY.
