Cougar Baseball Outlasts UCLA

May 14, 2004

LOS ANGELES - Washington State's Grant Richardson drove home two runs with a single to highlight a three-run tenth inning as the Cougars defeated UCLA 10-9 in the opener of a three-game Pacific-10 Conference baseball series, Friday. Collin Henderson capped the Cougar rally with a double to drive home Richardson.

After WSU took at 10-7 lead in the top of the tenth, UCLA rallied for two runs on sacrifice flies by McCarthy and Wes Whisler. However, the Bruins stranded the tying and winning runs on base when Daman Jr. fanned Averill looking to end the game.

WSU's (26-20, 6-10 Pac-10), Wayne Daman Jr. (3-4) earned the win pitching the final 2.2 innings, allowing four hits and two runs, both earned. Starting pitcher Aaron Trolia struck out seven Bruins, while allowing four runs, three earned and four hits in 6.0 innings.

UCLA (27-24, 8-8 Pac-10), relief pitcher Brant Rustich (3-3) took the loss, recording one out and allowing two runs, both earned, and two hits.

WSU took the early lead, scoring three runs in the first with three hits. Jay Miller singled to score Kaeo Rubin. Richardson followed with an RBI-ground out to score Jason Freeman and Zach McAngus singled to left field to drive home Miller.

The Bruins cut the deficit to 3-1 in the bottom of the first on Ryan McCarthy's solo home run.

The Cougars increased their lead to 4-1 in the second when Freeman singled to left field driving home Rubin, who reached base on a fielder's choice and advanced on a throwing error.

UCLA scored two runs in the second to bring the game within one run. Matt Thayer, who reached on a WSU error, scored on a bases loaded single by Jarrad Page. Preston Griffen was then hit by a pitch to score Brandon Averill, who was also hit by a pitch.

The Cougs extended their lead to 5-3 in the fifth inning when Richardson recorded one of his four RBI on a double that scored Miller.

In the seventh inning Miller plated Rubin with a sacrifice fly to center field that gave WSU a 6-3 advantage.

UCLA answered with a single run in the seventh when McCarthy led off the inning with a two-base hit and then scored when Thayer singled through the right side.

With the bases loaded in the eighth, Brandon Reddinger hit a sacrifice fly to right, driving home Zach Kosturos and gave the Cougars a 7-4 lead.

The Bruins tied the game, 7-7 off the WSU bullpen with three runs in the eighth. After Cougar reliever Bryce Chamberlin walked three Bruins to load the bases, UCLA's Brett McMillan doubled to clear the bases off Daman Jr.

The Cougars will face UCLA Saturday, at 1 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Stadium in the second game of the Pac-10 series.
