No. 15 Washington Gives USC Another Heartbreaker

May 14, 2004

LOS ANGELES - Taylor Johnson and Greg Isaacson recorded RBI singles in the top of the 10th Friday as the No. 15 Washington Huskies defeated the USC Trojans, 8-6, in 10 innings at Dedeaux Field. The Huskies rallied from a six-run deficit to earn the win in the first game of a Pac-10 Conference series.

Isaacson went 3-for-6 with a double and three RBI. Freshman Tim Lincecum (8-1) pitched the ninth inning to earn the victory for the Huskies while Will Fenton threw in the 10th to earn his seventh save of the season.

Washington is now 31-15-1 overall on the season and 13-6 in Pac-10 play while USC fell to 21-26 overall and 7-9 in conference action. The Trojans have lost nine of their last 11 games.

USC freshman Ian Kennedy got the no-decision for the Trojans, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. He walked only one and struck out seven.

Senior shortstop Michael Moon was hit by a Kyle Parker pitch to lead off the bottom of the first. The right foot injury left Moon hobbled for the remainder of the game, but he sparked a six-run first inning for the Trojans. With runners at first and third, Moon scored on a passed ball for the first run. Later in the inning, Parker walked right fielder Cyle Hankerd and designated hitter Josh Fogel with the bases loaded for two more runs. Moon capped the scoring with a two-run single to center.

The Trojans loaded the bases with no outs in the third, but a line out by Fogel and a 4-6-3 double play groundout by Moon got Parker out of the jam.

Left fielder Zach Clem put the Huskies on the board in the fourth with a leadoff blast to center field, his 11th of the season. Center fielder Brent Lillibridge hit a two-run double down the left field line in the fifth to make it a 6-3 USC lead.

Clem added his second RBI of the night in the seventh with an RBI single and two outs to make it a two-run deficit. USC third baseman Billy Hart was ejected in the bottom of the seventh for throwing his bat after being called out on strikes and it proved to be a pivotal play. In the Huskies' ninth, Isaacson lined a two-run, game-tying double over the glove of third baseman Dale Legaspi.

With two outs in the 10th, Johnson singled to center to score pinch runner Nick Burnham from second. Johnson would later score on Isaacson's single to center.

The series will continue tomorrow at 2 p.m. and conclude on Sunday (May 16) at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker live stats, on
