May 14, 2004
CORVALLIS, Ore. - No. 20 ranked Oregon State University dropped a 4-2 contest against No. 2 ranked University of California in Friday's Pacific-10 Conference softball action.
California (44-11; 11-8 Pac-10) jumped on the scoreboard early, taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Bears opened the game with back-to-back singles and then catcher Haley Woods hammered her 15th home run of the season with a three-run shot over the center field fence.
The Beavers (40-24; 4-15 Pac-10) narrowed the Bear advantage when sophomore Lisa Allen led-off the bottom of the second inning with her team-leading 11th home run of the season - and third this year against Cal - with a blast over the left-center field fence.
The momentum shift didn't last for long however, as Woods sent the first pitch of the third inning off the scoreboard in left field for her second homer of the game, making the score 4-1.
Oregon State senior hurler Monica Hoffman settled in as the game moved on, retiring 15 straight batters to close out the contest after Woods' blast in the third. Hoffman tallied five strikeouts in the game to up her season total to 238 - just eight K's shy of the school record. The right-hander also moved into a tie for fourth place in the OSU record book after recording her 67th career complete game.
OSU opened the fifth inning with an infield single by Adrienne Alo and Brianne McGowan followed with a walk, but the Beavers were unable to capitalize after Alo was caught in a rundown and pinch runner Carrie Syphers was also thrown out on the play.
A trio of Oregon State hits in the bottom of the sixth helped the Beavers make the score 4-2. Alana Mendoza legged out a single to open the frame and Mia Longfellow also reached with an infield hit, setting up Allen's second RBI of the game with a single up the middle.
Kelly Anderson earned the victory for Cal to improve to 23-8 on the season.
'Defensively we played well, but we made too many mental mistakes for this time of the year and against that caliber of an opponent,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker.
Oregon State closes out the regular season on Saturday with a double-header against No. 8 Stanford University. Game-one is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Beaver senior pitchers Dena DuBois and Hoffman will be recognized in a pre-game ceremony.
