Bears Claw To Middle of the Pac
May 15, 2004
TUCSON, Ariz. - Cal saw the dividends from the investments of the last year and a half under second-year head coach Chris Huffins at the conclusion of the Pac-10 Championships tonight at Drachman Stadium. The Golden Bear women were fifth with 69 points, leaps and bounds above their ninth place finish last year. The Golden Bear men finished seventh with 75 points, just one point out of sixth, which Stanford claimed with 76 points. UCLA swept the men's and women's team titles.
Sophomore Teak Wilburn was the Golden Bears' Pac-10 individual champion in the high jump. He won the Pac-10 title with a jump of 7-03.25 (2.22m).
The women's 4x100 meter relay team (junior Shannan Hawes and sophomores Antonette Carter, Tiffany Johnson and Osarhiemen Omwanghe) broke its own school record with a time of 44.28 for fourth-place. The crew set its previous school record of 44.38 at the Big Meet on May 1.
Carter also broke her school record in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.33 for a runner-up finish. She set her previous record of 23.45 just yesterday in the preliminaries of the event. She finished third in the 100 meter dash in 11.57 seconds.
The women got runner-up finishers out of school record-holder and senior Sheni Russell in the discus as she threw a 174-06 (53.20m) and senior Deanna Slaton in the 400 meter hurdles, 58.65. Slaton remains second all-time at Cal in the event.
Adding to his second place finish in the shot yesterday, junior Rhuben Williams left the championships with top-five finishes in three events. He finished third in the discus today with a personal best of 173-00 (52.73m) and a fourth place finish in the hammer, 198-09 (60.58m).
Cal got top three finishes out of several Bears today, including senior Bruce Giron who finished second in the triple jump with a personal best 52-10.00 (16.10m). Giron also finished fifth in the 110 meter hurdles, 14.53. Senior Ahmad Wright finished third in the 400 meter hurdles at 50.35, his season-best. Junior David Glasgow finished third to Wilburn in the high jump with a mark of 7-01.00 (2.16m). The men's 4x100 meter relay team finished fifth in a time of 41.00 seconds.
Other point-scorers, coincidentally all finishing fifth, were sophomore Osarhiemen Omwanghe in the 100 meter hurdles (13.55), sophomore Trinety White in the women's triple jump (40-07.50), sophomore Kurt Seefeld in the discus (169-03) and junior Brooke Meredith in the 400 meter hurdles (1:00.44).
