Bruins Blank Sun Devils in Opening Game of Doubleheader
May 15, 2004
LOS ANGELES - UCLA improved to 38-9, 11-8 Pac-10 in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against Arizona State as the Bruins shut out the Sun Devils, 6-0. Caitlin Benyi and Claire Sua had home runs in the win as Keira Goerl improved to 23-7 on the season. UCLA's five seniors, Goerl, Sua, Stephanie Ramos, Julie Hoshizaki and Amanda Simpson were honored in a pre-game ceremony.
UCLA opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning as Ashley Herrera led off the inning with a walk and Catilin Benyi clubbed her 19th home run of the season over the scoreboard in left field. Claire Sua then matched Benyi's home run with one of her own, a two-out solo shot over the scoreboard in left field, giving UCLA a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, the Sun Devils loaded the bases on an infield single by Kristin Crenshaw, followed by a walk to Phelan Wright. Valerie Sevilla then hit into a fielders choice with the attempt at the out at second base, but all runners were safe to load the bases. However, Bruin senior pitcher Keira Goerl proceeded to strike out the side with consecutive K's to Keri Pulcifer, Ashley Werschky and pinch-hitter Kim Zadrozny to end the inning and the ASU threat.
The fourth inning saw UCLA put three more runs on the board as Emily Zaplatosch led off the inning with a single before being replaced by pinch runner Amanda Simpson. Simpson stole second base and took third on a wild pitch. After Ashley Herrera walked to give the Bruins runners on the corners and Benyi drew a walk to load the bases, Andrea Duran singled to the fence in center field, scoring two runners to give UCLA a 5-0 lead. That hit prompted the Sun Devils to make a pitching change, moving Ashley Werschky from the circle to first base, and bringing Bre DeSanto in to pitch. Claire Sua then singled through the right side to score Benyi and give the Bruins a 6-0 lead after four innings.
Keira Goerl improves to 23-7 with the win. She pitched a four-hit shutout on the day, striking out six and walking two.
The Bruins and Sun Devils will begin game two of the doubleheader at approximately 3:45 pm.
