Buck Outdueled In 3-1 Baseball Loss

May 15, 2004

TEMPE, Ariz. - Oregon State's Dallas Buck allowed just three runs on six hits in 7 1/3 innings Saturday night but lost a pitchers' duel to 14th-ranked Arizona State's Jason Urquidez 3-1 in Pacific-10 baseball at Packard Stadium. The Beavers put the tying run in scoring position in the ninth inning, but Chris Campos' line drive was snagged to end the game.

OSU (27-17 overall, 7-10 Pacific-10) and Arizona State (34-13, 9-8) finish their series Sunday at 1 p.m., and the game can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240). The Beavers then return home to play Portland on Tuesday at 5 p.m. before going to Washington State next weekend.

'It's tough losing after we only give up three runs, but our team has enough heart that we're going to come out Sunday and give them another run for their money.'

On Saturday, the Beavers outhit Arizona State 10-6 but lost for just the second time this season in a game in which they outhit their opponent. Buck's record fell to 3-4 despite pitching one of his best games of the season against a Sun Devil squad that carried a .325 team batting average into the game.

'He pitched excellent tonight - it was a great job by him,' OSU outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury said of the freshman righthander. 'If you can hold Arizona State to three runs ... I mean, Arizona State is a great offensive team. We outhit them; we just couldn't manage to get some more runs, unfortunately. But Dallas pitched a great game tonight, awesome.'

Urquidez, a junior righthander, went 8 1/3 innings and gave up nine hits but just the one run, walking two and striking out 12 to up his record to 10-2. The Beavers left runners at first and second in the first and third innings and left the bases loaded in the fifth, and hit into an inning-ending double play with runners at the corners in the seventh.

'He's not overpowering - he just hit his spots, and any time you hit your spots and mix up your pitches, you're going to be effective at any level,' Ellsbury said of Urquidez. 'He just did a real good job tonight.

It was Ellsbury who finally put the Beavers on the scoreboard with the last of his four hits in the game. Tony Calderon led off the ninth inning with a walk, then Chris Kunda singled with one out to advance Calderon to second. Zechry Zinicola, who earned the save in ASU's win on Friday, entered the game and Ellsbury poked a double down the leftfield line to drive in Calderon and send Campos to third base.

Zinicola then struck Paul Richie out looking at a borderline pitch, and Campos worked the count full before lining out to ASU first baseman Chris Cook.

Ellsbury's 4-for-5 night tied his career-high for hits; it was his first four-hit game of the season and his 22nd multi-hit game of the season. Chris Kunda was 2-for-4 for the Beavers.

ASU took a 1-0 lead on three hits in the bottom of the third inning, but Buck got an inning-ending double-play ball to prevent a bigger inning. Two walks, a hit and a wild pitch gave the Sun Devils their second run in the bottom of the fifth, and they picked up their final run in the bottom of the eighth after Buck surrendered a double and hit a batter with one out, then reliever Kyle Aselton walked the only two hitters he faced. Jared Sanders entered the game and fanned the next two hitters, though, to keep the score at 3-0.
