May 15, 2004
BERKELEY - The No. 14 California women's tennis team wasted little time blowing past Illinois State, 4-0, in the first round of the 2004 NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament at Hellman Tennis Center in Berkeley on Saturday. Cal won the doubles point and didn't lose a set in singles competition to improve to 17-8 overall and advance to a second round regional championship match versus Fresno State on Sunday at 12 noon.
With the loss, Illinois State concludes its season with an 18-4 record.
The Golden Bears got off to a great start and didn't look back, as Cal's No. 47-ranked duo of Nicole Havlicek and Jody Scheldt made quick work of Illinois State's Elizabeth Bingier and Emilie Sechaud, 8-1, on court two. The Bears claimed the doubles point when Cal's No. 7-ranked doubles team of Raquel Kops-Jones and Jieun Jacobs defeated Illinois State's Liina Suurvarik and Katri Miller, 8-4, on court one.
In singles competition, Cal's Kops-Jones, the No. 1-ranked women's player in collegiate tennis, defeated Illinois State's Suurvarik, 6-1, 6-2, and Cal's Sasha Podkolzina and Jessica Shu followed closely behind with straight set victories to give the Bears a 4-0 victory. The match was ended once Cal was determined as the winner.
In the first match of the day at Hellman, No. 16 Fresno State outlasted No. 35 Sacramento State, 4-3, in a tight match that lasted more than four hours. Cal will face Fresno State in a rematch of a dual match played during the regular season. In that match on February 21, Fresno State defeated Cal for the first time ever, 4-2.
The winner of Sunday's contest will advance to the NCAA Round of 16 in Athens, Ga. on May 20. Cal has advanced to the 'Sweet 16' 19 times in school history including 18 times in the past 19 years.
