No. 2 California Sweeps No. 13 Oregon In Pac-10 Doubleheader, 3-1 & 5-2
May 15, 2004
EUGENE, Ore. - No. 2 California validated its national ranking Saturday, wrapping up the Pac-10 season with a pair of victories over No. 13 Oregon at Howe Field, 3-1 and 5-2. The doubleheader sweep extended the Bears' winning streak to eight and improved California's record to 46-11 overall and 13-8 in the Pac-10.
Home runs from junior CF Kaleo Eldredge (solo) and junior 2B Jessica Pamanian accounted for the Bears' three runs in the first game against Oregon (38-19 overall, 10-11 Pac-10). Sophomore P Kristina Thorson (23-3) threw seven complete innings, allowed just one hit and struck out a whopping 14 Ducks. Oregon's lone run came in the second inning on an RBI sacrifice bunt by sophomore SS Breanne Sabol following a wild pitch, an error and a walk. From then on Thorson was back in control, carrying a no-hitter through six and a third innings before junior 3B Ashley Richards slapped a double off the left field wall.
Wasting no time in the second game, California put up runs in each of the first four innings. Junior 3B Vicky Galindo led off the first with a double to left before sophomore LF Lindsay James brought her home on a single to right. Senior Roni Rodrigues led off the second with a double down the left field line, was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from freshman DP Alyssa Smoke and scored when junior RF Kristin Bayless singled through the right side. Junior SS Chelsea sent a two-run homer over the left field wall in the third to increase Cal's lead to 4-0.
Oregon put its only two runs on the board in the bottom of the third with a solo home run by sophomore DP Beth Boskovich and an RBI double from sophomore RF Dani Baird that scored junior 2B Erin Goodell following her own double. At that point Thorson came back into the circle for California, relieving second game starter junior P Kelly Anderson.
Pamanian singled to score James from second in the fourth to tally the Bears' fifth run of the afternoon's second match, 5-2. Thorson picked up her second win of the day in relief for Anderson, allowing just one hit over 4.2 innings and striking out another seven Ducks for a one-day strikeout total of 21. As a team, California racked up 14 hits in the second game and totaled 22 over the doubleheader.
The Bears now await the NCAA Softball Regional Tournament bracket unveiling, to be made Sunday between 5:30-6 p.m. live on ESPNews.
