No. 20 Arizona Defeats Florida State In First Round of NCAA Tournament

Gainesville, Fla. - The No. 20 Arizona men's tennis team defeated No. 48 Florida State, 4-3 in a tightly contested match. Arizona won the doubles point by virtue of winning two of the three doubles matches as well as three singles matches on courts one, five and six. With the win, Arizona improves to 15-8, while the loss drops Florida State to 10-14.

In the doubles portion of the competition, Arizona won on courts one and two. The No. 24-ranked team of junior Colin O'Grady and sophomore Roger Matalonga earned the first doubles victory by defeating No. 39 Chris Westerhof and Jeff Groslimond, 8-4. The pair improves its record to 17-9 overall. Senior Whi Kim and sophomore Daniel Andrus clinched the ever-important doubles point by defeated Mat Cloer and Jarrod Owen, 8-5. Senior Tom Lloyd and junior Paul Warkentin fell on court three, 8-5, to Chip Webb and Joe Bassett.

The deciding match was on court one where No. 77 Matalonga battled No. 27 Mat Cloer. After splitting the first two sets, Matalonga enjoyed a 3-2 lead in the third before having to seek aid for a cramp. After a time violation, Cloer was awarded a point and then a game to tie the decisive set at 3-3. Then, both men held serve to tie the match at 4-4. After a second pause in the match to battle the cramp, Matalonga began to slow and lose mobility, but managed to win the match and advance the team to the second round with a gutsy performance, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.

Leading 1-0, Arizona jumped out early by winning the first singles match off the courts. Lloyd earned a victory on court five where he dropped Chip Webb, 7-5, 6-4. Shortly after the completion of the first match, Florida State earned its first point of the afternoon when Jeff Groslimond defeated Andrus, 6-4, 6-4, on court four.

Warkentin earned his 11th win in 12 matches when he defeated Jarrod Owen, 6-2, 7-6 (3). Down 3-1, Florida State battled back to tie the match at 3-3, with consecutive wins on courts two and three. Kim fell to No. 106 Jonathas Sucupira, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1, on court two, while O'Grady lost to Chris Westerhof, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 on court three.

Arizona will go be in action again on Sunday, May 16, when the Wildcats face No. 8 Florida in the Second Round of the NCAA Team Championships. For live scoring visit:
