Softball Rebounds with Doubleheader Sweep at Washington

May 15, 2004

SEATTLE, Wash. - The top-ranked Arizona softball team swept No. 7 Washington in a double header Saturday, winning the first game 3-0 and the second by a score of 5-1. Alicia Hollowell pitched her 39th win of the season in the first matchup, and Wendy Allen tossed the second game for her ninth win without a loss.

Autumn Champion led the Wildcats' offense in game one, going four-for-five with four singles and a run. Arizona scored the winning run in the top of the fifth, when Champion hit a one-out single to the pitcher. Allen and Mackenzie Vandergeest drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. With two out, Shelly Schultz drew another walk off Washington pitcher Ashley Boek to score the eventual game-winner.

Hollowell pitched a 14-K, three-hit shutout, her 24th of the season. Hollowell has shut out opponents in her last six outings and has not allowed a run to score since April 28th versus Arizona State.

In the second game, Arizona got on the board in the second inning, when Jackie Coburn led off with a single through the left side. Kristie Fox put down a sacrifice bunt to advance Coburn to second, and Samantha Quintero singled to put runners at the corners. Schultz hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Coburn and putting the Cats up, 1-0.

Arizona's game-winner came in the next inning, when Lowe singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Coburn, and stole third. Vandergeest singled to left, scoring Lowe and giving the Cats the lead for good.

Arizona ended the regular season with its sweep of the Huskies and will next be in action when the Cats host NCAA Regionals in Tucson on May 20-23.
