May 15, 2004
TUCSON, Ariz. - The first day of the 2004 Pac-10 Track and Field Championships came to a close Friday night with the Arizona State teams turning in numerous stellar performances to climb in the team standings at the meet being held in Tucson, Ariz. The women, behind three individual titles, sit in first place with 56 points while Stanford is second at 55 points. The men, with two individual titles earned, sit third with 40 points. Oregon leads the race with 67 points while UCLA is second at 49.
For the second time in as many weekends, Jacquelyn Johnson secured 10 team points for the Sun Devils while laying claim to a conference championship. Following her heptathlon victory one week ago, Johnson went out and won the high jump with a clearance of 1.77m (5-9.75). Johnson became the first Sun Devil woman to win two titles in one championship event since Kelly MacDonald won the 3,000m steeplechace and 5,000m run at the 2001 meet.
On the track, a pair of championships were secured for ASU as Amy Hastings won the women's 3,000m steeplechase before fellow redshirt freshman Aaron Aguayo brought home the win in the men's race. Both titles are the first for each runner in their first conference championship meet while the victory in the women's race secured a spot in history as the Sun Devils have won all four contested steeplechase events for women. The double wins mark the first time ASU has swept the race at the same championship meet.
Several other Sun Devils scored points on the day to help bolster the team standings. Porchea Carroll earned seven points in the long jump as she finished second with a jump of 6.14m (20-1.75) while Desiree Davila collected eight points with her runner-up finish in the 10,000m run (36:52.48). Julia Pedersen finished fifth in the shot put (15.36m/50-4.75) for four points while Alvina Begay finshed sixth in the 10,000m run (27:48.39) to garner three points. Two Sun Devils scored two points as Jana Pintz finished seventh in the javelin (44.14m/144-10) while Liz Lindgren placed seventh in the 3,000m steeplechase (11:00.77).
On the men's side, Trevell Quinley finished second overall in the long jump with a leap of 7.72m (25-4.00) to earn eight points for the team while Ryan Warrenburg scored three points in the 3,000m steeplechase (9:05.10). Stephen Dolk rounded out the scoring with one point earned for eighth place in the pole vault (5.17m/16-11.50).
The final day of action concludes Saturday in Tucson. Next up for the Sun Devils is a return trip to Tucson, for the fourth week in a row, as members of the team will compete in the Wildcat Classic (May 22) in preparation for the NCAA West Region Championships in two weeks.
