No. 32 Cal Falls to No. 4 USC, 4-1, to End Season

LOS ANGELES - The No. 32 California men's tennis team lost to No. 4-ranked, and No. 2-seeded, USC, 4-1, in the second round regional championship of the 2004 NCAA Men's Tennis Tournament at USC's Marks Tennis Stadium in Los Angeles on Sunday. USC won the doubles point and three of the first four singles points to claim the team victory and improve to 21-3 for the season.
With the loss, Cal ends its season with an 8-17 overall record. It was the third time Cal has lost to USC this season.
Cal lost the doubles point as USC took 8-2 and 8-4 victories on courts two and three respectively. Cal's doubles match on court one featuring No. 6-ranked Patrick Briaud and Balazs Veress and was called once it was determined USC had won the doubles point.
In singles action, the Trojans staked a 2-0 lead when USC's No. 86-ranked Jamil Al-Agba defeated Cal's No. 71 Veress, 6-1, 6-3, on court two. The Bears struck back by winning the next point as Cal's No. 56-ranked Wayne Wong claimed a 6-4, 6-4, straight-set victory over USC's No. 19-ranked Adriano Biasella on court one. It was the second time Wong has defeated Biasella this season. Unfortunately for the Bears, it was the only Cal singles victory of the day. Cal's Tyler Browne and Patrick Briaud fought valiantly on courts three and four, each forcing a set to seven games, but in the end USC took straight-set decisions to claim a 4-1 team victory.
The remaining singles matches were ended once it was determined USC had won the dual match.
