OSU Captures Third At Pac-10 Championships
May 16, 2004
RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - -
The No. 7 Oregon State men's rowing program finished third at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships on Sunday amid a host of top-caliber West Coast crews competing at the 2,000-meter Lake Natoma course.
Third-ranked Washington narrowly ended No. 4 Cal's string of seven consecutive Pac-10 Championships, totaling 66 points to Cal's 65; OSU had 48 and No. 16 Stanford was fourth with 44.
In the varsity eight Grand Final (places 1-6), OSU faced a dead heat with Stanford in a battle for third place over the first 1,000 meters, but pulled away over the final half to finish third in six minutes, 3.7 seconds.
Washington won the varsity eight sprint by less than two seconds over Cal with a time of 5:52.9.
'Our guys felt this was the hardest they've raced to date and that they had a good piece,' OSU coach Kjell Oswald said. 'We'll take this and improve on things over the next two weeks and see how we stack up against some of the East Coast schools.'
The Beavers now look forward to the IRA National Championships June 3-5 at Cherry Hill, N.J.
Down seven seats to Cal with 500 meters to go in the JV eight Grand Final, OSU put on a charge to finish 0.6 seconds back of the Bears in third in 6:12.8.
'I think the JV had the race of the day,' Oswald said. 'They had to find a way to bring the same intensity they had last weekend but row a smarter race. Our guys kept chipping away and were within seven seats of Cal with 500 meters to go Then they made a move and got to within a second of Cal for third place.
'They had their best race to date - it was a phenomenal performance and the guys are excited for IRAs.'
OSU was neck-and-neck with Washington in the novice eight Grand Final and used a surge over the final 500 meters to secure third and pull within a few seats of second-place Stanford in a time of 6:12.9.
'They were able to hold UW off finally, so that was a big improvement. Our guys felt good and were pleased with their race.'
