May 18, 2004

The second-ranked UCLA women's golf team is tied for second place after round one of the NCAA Championships, hosted by Auburn University at Auburn National Golf Course in Opelika, AL.

The Bruins endured a weather delay on the front nine and posted a one-over par score of 289. They are tied with top-ranked Duke. Both teams trail Oklahoma State by one stroke. Ohio State is fourth at 296 (+8), followed by Wake Forest and Vanderbilt at 298 (+10).

''It was a solid start for us today,' said Head Coach Carrie Forsyth. 'We are where we wanted to be after the first day. We had the delay to deal with. The conditions were favorable, but there were some tough pin positions that I thought would be used later in the tournament. '

Senior Gina Umeck and sophomore Susie Mathews each posted one-under par rounds of 71 on Tuesday and both are tied for fifth place. Umeck, the Bruins' most experienced NCAA Championship player, played the last five holes in two-under par. Mathews played the last six holes in two-under for an inward score of 34.

Senior Krystal Shearer, playing in her first NCAA Championship tournament, posted a solid round of 73, one-over par. After a birdie on the first hole, she bogeyed Nos.2 and 5 to go to one-over. She then birdied Nos. 7 and 9 to card an outward 35. She played the inward nine in two-over 38.

Junior Charlotte Mayorkas, one of the favorites to win the event, posted a 74 and is tied for 34th.

A pair of double-bogeys forced freshman Hannah Jun, the winner of the NCAA West Regional, to post a 76. She is tied for 58th.

'Everyone (on the UCLA team) feels they left quite a few good shots out there,' said Mathews. 'We definitely think we've got room to improve.

'We've got an early start [Wednesday],' she continued. 'Hopefully, we can get something going while the weather is quiet.'

Three players named Allison are among the individual leaders after the first round. Allison Hanna of Ohio State is first after a 69 (-3), and Allison Curdt of Florida State and Allison Fouch of Michigan State are tied for second at 70 (-2).
