Cougar Rowers Selected for NCAA Championships

PULLMAN, Wash. - For the second straight year and the second time in school history, Washington State has been selected as a team to compete in the NCAA Division I Women's Rowing Championships.

The event will be held May 28-30, at the CSUS Aquatic Center in Rancho Cordova, Calif. Sacramento State is the host institution.

'The varsity eight used up eight of their nine lives at the Pac-10 Championships,' WSU Rowing Head Coach Jane LaRiviere said. 'We are indebted to the second varsity team for its spectacular performance at the Pac-10 Championships and for our NCAA bid. Our team has one more weekend of racing to make its mark.'

The NCAA Division I Women's Rowing Committee selected 12 teams to compete at the championships. Each team is required to field two boats of eight rowers and one boat of four rowers. Four other boats of eight rowers received at-large bids to the championships.

Of the 12 teams selected, three are from the Pacific-10. California and Washington also received bids. USC's varsity eight received one of the four at-large bids. The varsity eight for all four Pac-10 schools selected are ranked in the current USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Division I poll. The Golden Bears are No. 1, followed by the No. 9 Huskies, No. 12 Cougars and No. 15 Trojans.

WSU finished third behind California and Washington last weekend at the Pac-10 Championships, which were also held on Lake Natoma.

Tickets can be purchased by calling (916) 278-2222. Prices for tickets are $5 Friday and $10 Saturday and Sunday for adults, and $3 Friday and $5 Saturday and Sunday for youth and seniors. A three-day pass is $20 for adults and $10 for seniors and youth. Heats start at 8 a.m. Friday, 9 a.m. Saturday and 9:45 a.m. Sunday.

In 2003, the Cougar Women placed 12th, with Harvard winning the NCAA Championship held in Indianapolis.
