No. 3 Cal Struggles in Opening Round of NCAA Championships
May 18, 2004
OPELIKA, Ala. - No. 3 California struggled to find it stride in the opening round of the NCAA Championships and is in 23rd place at 309 with three rounds to play at the Grand National Lake Course. No. 10 Oklahoma State holds the early lead with a score of 288, one stroke ahead of No. 1 Duke and No. 2 UCLA (289).
No. 6 Ohio State is fourth at 296, while No. 13 Wake Forest and No. 4 Vanderbilt are tied for fifth at 298.
Cal senior Sarah Huarte and sophomore Sofie Andersson performed well for the Bears. Huarte is tied for 18th at plus-one 73. Following a two-over-par performance on the front nine, she played the back nine at minus-one on the strength of three of her team-high five birdies. The three-time first-team All-Pac-10 pick has led Cal to four straight NCAA Championships.
Andersson is tied for 46th with a 75 in her first NCAA trip after competing as a freshman at Mississippi State.
The other three Cal golfers all finished with scores of 80 or above -- Claire Dury (80), Sophia Sheridan (81) and Anna Temple (84). Andersson and Dury ended the round strong with birdies on the par 4, 18th hole.
Ohio State's Allison Hanna, who finished second at the NCAA West Regional, holds the early lead at minus-three 69. Tied for second is Florida State's Alison Curdt, Michigan State's Allison Fouch and San Jose State's Ashley Gomes are tied for second at 70.
Play was halted in the afternoon for 39 minutes due to lightning.
Cal looks to recover from its slow start when it tees off the second round Wednesday at 6:50 a.m. PT. Auburn University serves as host of this year's national championship.
