First-Place Dawgs Host UCLA
May 20, 2004
WHAT'S UP?: The Washington baseball team (33-16-1 overall, 14-7 in the Pac-10) enters its final weekend of Pac-10 play in first place in the conference standings, a half-game ahead of No. 1-ranked Stanford (40-10, 12-6). The Cardinal control their own destiny as they have six games remaining (all at home vs. USC and Arizona State), meaning that the Huskies have a magic number of four to win at least a share of the title (if the UW and Stanford tie, Washington gets the Pac-10's automatic berth having beaten Stanford two of three). A combination of Husky wins and Cardinal losses totalling four would give the Huskies a share of the title. This weekend, the Dawgs (ranked No. 13 by Collegiate Baseball, No. 14 by Baseball America and No. 21 in the Sports Weekly/ESPN coaches' poll) close out the league slate vs. third-place UCLA (29-25, 10-8). Washington's next win will be the 423rd of head coach Ken Knutson's career, making him the winningest coach in UW baseball history. Next weekend, the Dawgs finish the regular season with a three-game, non-conference series against UC Irvine at Husky Ballpark. Here's a look at this weekend's games, with UW's probable starting pitchers:
Fri., May 14: UW vs. UCLA, 6:30 p.m. -- RHP Kyle Parker (2-2, 4.36)
Sat., May 15: UW vs. UCLA, 1:00 p.m. -- RHP Matt Kasser (3-0, 6.65)
Sun., May 16: UW vs. UCLA, 1:00 p.m. -- RHP Tim Lincecum (8-2, 3.67)
SERIES HISTORY: Washington is 9-22 all-time against UCLA, though in games played at Husky Ballpark, the Dawgs are 5-1 against the Bruins. Last year, the Huskies took two of three in a series at Jackie Robinson Stadium in L.A. In the opener, the Huskies scored two in the ninth, but lost, 5-4. Greg Isaacson homered for the Huskies. In the second game, Brent Lillibridge went deep twice as the Huskies edged the Bruins, 3-2. In the Sunday game, Washington belted five homers, including two from John Otness, as the Huskies scored in seven of the nine innings for a 13-4 victory. Otness was 3-for-5 with four RBI and Nick Batkoski went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a home run. Husky head coach Ken Knutson is 8-10 all-time against the Bruins.
COACH 'K': Now in his 12th season in charge of the Washington baseball team, Ken Knutson has compiled an impressive list of accomplishments. Knutson has led the Dawgs to two Pac-10 championships, four Pac-10 Northern Division titles, two other second-place finishes and five NCAA Regional berths. His career overall record now stands at 422-269-2 (.610). With 422 wins, he is tied as the winningest coach in UW history, alongside his former coach, Bob MacDonald (422-322-7). Before becoming the Husky head man in 1993, Knutson served as the Husky pitching coach for eight seasons. In 1985, his UW pitching staff led the nation with a 2.80 ERA. Knutson holds a 206-88-2 (.699) record in home games. He is 181-122 (.597) in Pac-10 games. Knutson has coached 40 first-team All-Pac-10 selections in 11 seasons, and has been named league coach of the year three times. A 1981 All-Pac-10 left-handed pitcher at the UW, he is joined by assistants Joe Ross, Travis Jewett, and Gregg Swenson and undergrad assistant Scott Robertson.

LAST WEEK: After winning a pair of contest against Portland (20-4 and 5-1) May 11 and 12, the Huskies traveled to USC, where they won two of three against the Trojans. Last Friday, USC scored six runs in the first inning, but the Huskies held the Trojans scoreless the rest of the way and won, 8-6, in 10 innings. Greg Isaacson hit a two-run double in the ninth to tie it and a single from Taylor Johnson drove in the go-ahead run in the 10th. Saturday, Zach Clem led the way, going 3-for-5 with four RBI and a homer as the Huskies rolled to a 13-4 win. Matt Kasser allowed only two earned runs over 7.2 innings for the victory. Sunday, USC scored four in the first, but the Huskies came back to take an 8-4 lead, thanks in part to a home run from Taylor Johnson before USC stormed back for a 10-8 win. Tuesday at Husky Ballpark, the Dawgs snapped NAIA power Lewis-Clark State's 22-game winning streak, beating the Warriors, 8-4.
THE PAC-10 TITLE SCENARIO: Washington enters its last weekend of Pac-10 play in first place at 14-7 in conference play, a half-game ahead of second-place Stanford (12-6) and two and a half ahead of third-place UCLA and Arizona State (10-8). The Huskies have played three more Pac-10 games than each of those teams. Stanford plays USC this weekend and ASU the next. UCLA has the Huskies this weekend at Oregon State May 28-30. So, in order to win at least a share of the Pac-10 Conference championship (the UW wins a tie-breaker vs. Stanford), the UW has a magic number of four -- a total of UW wins and Stanford losses. If the Huskies were to win all three vs. UCLA, they would need one loss from Stanford over its last six games. If the UW goes 2-for-3 vs. the Bruins, they would need two Pac-10 losses from the Cardinal. A one-win weekend would mean that Huskies would need Stanford to lose three and would also allow the Bruins and Sun Devils to sneak into the race, depending on Stanford's results.
