Monica Hoffman Leads No. 3 Seeded Softball Past No. 6 Seeded Bowling Green, 7-0, In NCAA Regional Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Senior hurler Monica Hoffman matched her season-high with 12 strikeouts and earned her 20th victory of the year, as No. 3 seeded Oregon State University rolled past No. 6 seed Bowling Green State University, 7-0, in Thursday's opening game of the NCAA Regional Tournament hosted by University of Michigan.
Oregon State (41-26) set the tone from the start. Hoffman retired the first three batters she faced, including striking out a pair, and the Beavers poured it on offensively - using four hits to take a 3-0 lead after one inning of play.
Adrienne Alo and Vanessa Iapala picked up walks in the opening inning and a single by Mia Longfellow set-up a one-out 2-RBI single through the right side by Kelly Petersen. Freshman Brianne McGowan followed with an RBI single up the middle. Alo broke the OSU single season runs scored mark in the frame when she crossed the plate for the 42nd time on the year.
Hoffman struck out the side in the second inning and continued to control the game from the circle. BGSU (34-29) picked up its first hit of the contest with a lead-off single in the top of the third, but Hoffman forced a pair of groundouts and recorded her sixth strikeout of the game to end the threat.
The Beaver offense added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning after back-to-back home runs from freshman Sherina Galvan and sophomore Ingrid Lochelt. Galvan's two-run blast over the left-center field fence was her third of the season, while Lochelt's lined shot to center field was her first at Oregon State.
McGowan made the score 7-0 when she belted her seventh home run of the season with a shot that sailed 260-feet over the left field fence in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Galvan, Lochelt and McGowan all went 2-for-3 in the game.
Hoffman reached double figures in strikeouts for the sixth time on the year and extended her school single season record to 259 K's. In NCAA Regional action, Hoffman has totaled 52 strikeouts in 51 innings of work.
Oregon State will now face No. 2 seeded Tennessee at 9:30 a.m. PDT on Friday. The Vols defeated No. 7 seed Illinois-Chicago 10-0 in five innings in their first game. The Beavers and Vols have met twice already this season, with the teams splitting a pair of 2-0 games.
