No. 3 Cal Climbs to Fourth After Three Rounds of NCAA Championships

May 20, 2004

OPELIKA, Ala. - Behind the record-breaking performance of Sarah Huarte and Sofie Andersson, No. 3 California shot a 292 and climbed from seventh to fourth place Thursday after three of four rounds at the NCAA Championships. The Golden Bears boast a three-day score of 883, one shot ahead of fifth-place Vanderbilt - which is playing with only four players - at the University of Auburn-hosted event.

No. 2 UCLA led after the second round and continued to hold that position today. The Bruins carded a 286 (-2), for a total of 858 (-6). No. 10 Oklahoma State equaled Cal's tournament-best round of 282 yesterday to leapfrog over top-ranked Duke for second place at 863. The Blue Devils lost ground with a 292 and are in third at 865.

Huarte, a U.S. Curtis Cup team member, shot a tournament-best round of 67 and is in third place with minus-seven 209, breaking previous school records she shared for 18 (68) and 36 (212) holes. The three-time first team All-Pac-10 senior started the round in a tie for third and held a share of the lead with four holes to play. Her day began with a bogey on the first hole and was followed up with seven birdies before a double bogey on the par 3 15th hole. Sophomore Sophia Sheridan was the only Cal golfer to save par on that hole. Huarte recovered to tally two more birdies on 16 and 17 but had a bogey on the 18th.

'Sarah had an outstanding day today,' said Cal head coach Nancy McDaniel. 'In her last 34 holes, she has 15 birdies, which is pretty amazing. She had nine birdies today, which is a definite school record, one that probably won't soon be broken. She putted well and got it going. She's got a good look at things tomorrow. We're hoping for the best for her. She's doing a great job leading her team.'

UCLA's Susie Matthews and Oklahoma State's Karin Sjodin are tied for first at 208, as both golfers began the day atop the leader board and shot 68s today. Andersson is in a three-way tie for fourth place at 214 (career best) on the strength of a minus-one effort (71) today. Cal's dynamic duo, which is a combined minus-13 over the last two rounds, is on pace to shatter Cal's best-ever individual finish at NCAAs - Ria Quaizon's tie for 28th last season.

'I'm really pleased with Sofie's play,' said McDaniel. 'She's really stepped up, especially with her back. Getting three or four rounds at nationals is pretty amazing seeing as she just picked up the club in January after a huge layoff. She and Sarah are doing an awesome job of leading the team together. They're actually rooming together and competing well for their team.'

Sheridan recorded a 76 for her best round of the tournament and is in a tie for 111th place at 236. Cal's other counting score was a 78 today from senior Claire Dury, who shares 102nd at 234. Senior Anna Temple tallied an 80, tying her for 99th at 233.

Cal's tee time at 12:30 p.m. on Friday in the final round at the Grand National Lake Course.
