Bears Make Big Move at West Regional

May 21, 2004

SUNRIVER, Ore. - The Cal men's golf team improved 24 strokes from its opening round score with an 11-under-par 277 total on the second day of the NCAA West Regional Friday at the Sunriver Resort at the Crosswater Club. As a result, the Bears made the biggest move of the day, going from a tie for 21st place into a tie for sixth.

The three-day tournament wraps up Saturday, with the Top 10 teams advancing to the NCAA championship rounds June 1-4 in Hot Springs, Va.

Cal's 11-under round was nine strokes better than any other school Friday. New Mexico (-2) and Arizona (-1) were the only others to manage to break par on the 7,597-yard course.

Overall, New Mexico leads the 27-team field at six-under-par 570, followed by UCLA (571) and three teams tied for third (575) - Arizona State, BYU and Arizona. The Bears are next, tied with Toledo, at two-over 578.

Senior Peter Tomasulo led all five Cal golfers at even par or better on the day with a four-under 68. He is currently tied for fifth in the individual competition at 140 (-4), just one shot out of the lead, which is shared by four golfers.

In addition, Michael Wilson and Jeff Hood both shot 69s Friday, while Scott Carlyle rebounded from a disastrous 85 Thursday with a round of 72, and Jesse Ruda shot a 71.

In Thursday's opening round, no Cal player broke par and the Bears skied to a 13-over 301 total. But Friday was a completely different story with all players at par or better. Tomasulo's 68 tied for the second-best round of the day, topped only by a 66 by New Mexico's Charlie Beljan.
