Janssen Holds Down UW In 3-1 UCLA Win

SEATTLE - UCLA senior Casey Janssen limited the 13th-ranked Washington baseball team toone run in a complete-game effort as the Bruins beat the Huskies, 3-1, in the first game of a three-game series Friday evening at Husky Ballpark.

Despite the loss, the Huskies (33-17-1 overall, 14-8) retained their half-game lead in theconference standings as top-ranked Stanford lost to USC, 9-3. Third-place UCLA improved to 30-25 overall and 11-8 in the league. The Huskies, who have only two conference games remaining,saw their magic number for a share of the conference title drop to three thanks to the Stanford loss.

Janssen (9-3) gave up a run in the first, but held the Huskies scoreless the rest of the way,allowing only six hits and walking one while striking out eight. Husky freshman Kyle Parker (2-3)took the loss, surrendering three runs on five hits over five and two-thirds. UW senior relieverTrent Baysinger faced only one batter over the minimum in his three and one-third innings.

Washington struck for its lone run in the first. Brent Lillibridge dropped a bloop double to right tolead off the game, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Greg Isaacson groundout.

UCLA took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the third. Jarrad Page walked to lead off andeventually scored from third on an errant pickoff throw to first. Later in the inning, the Bruinsloaded the bases with one out and a walk to Matt Thayer forced in a run to give UCLA the lead.

The Bruins tacked on a third run when catcher Chris Denove led off with his seventh home run ofthe season.

The UW's biggest threat came in the seventh when the Huskies put two aboard with two outs, butJanssen fanned Taylor Johnson to end the inning and retired the side in order in the eighth andninth.

Denove finished the day 2-for-4 with an RBI while freshman designated Matt Lane was the onlyHusky with more than one hit, going 2-for-3.

The series continues with 1:00 p.m. games Saturday and Sunday at Husky Ballpark.
