USC Shocks No. 1 Stanford For 9-3 Win

May 21, 2004

STANFORD, Calif. - Jon Brewster and Joey Metropoulos both homered Friday as the USC Trojans upset the No. 1 Stanford Cardinal, 9-3, in Pac-10 Conference action at Sunken Diamond. The Trojans snapped the Cardinal's 16-game home winning streak as Stanford suffered only its second loss in 25 home games (23-2) this season.

USC improved to 23-28 on the season and 9-10 in Pac-10 play while Stanford falls to 40-11 overall, 12-7 in conference.

Freshman starter Ian Kennedy (7-2) gave up just two runs on seven hits in six innings of work for the Trojans. Kennedy struck out six batters and walked two.

Tonight was Kennedy's third win of the season over a Top 25 opponent (vs. No. 5 Georgia Tech on Feb. 27 and at No. 22 Mississippi State on March 12). This season, Kennedy has a 2.73 ERA (85 2/3 IP, 80 H, 26 ER, 29 BB, 113 SO, .244 opponents' batting average).

Mark Romanczuk (10-2), who threw seven scoreless innings on March 5 against USC in Los Angeles, gave up seven runs on 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Brewster finished the night with a 3-for-5 performance with two doubles, a home run and three RBI. USC third baseman Billy Hart went 3-for-5 with two RBI.

Hart led off the third with a single to left, advancing to second on a sacrifice by freshman center fielder Daniel Perales. Hart moved to third on an infield ground out by Cyle Hankerd and shortstop Michael Moon walked on a full count pitch to put runners at the corners for Brewster. Brewster hit his fifth home run of the season on Romanczuk's first pitch for a 3-0 USC lead.

Stanford came right back in the bottom of the third after second baseman Jed Lowrie hit a two-run single up the middle to score Sam Fuld and Jonny Ash.

The Trojans scored another run in the fourth on Hart's RBI single, but left the bases loaded when Romanczuk retired Hankerd and Moon. The Cardinal had runners at first and second with no outs in the bottom of the fourth, but Kennedy struck out Chris Carter for the first out. Trojan catcher Jeff Clement threw out Donny Lucy on a double steal attempt at third and Chris Minaker flew out to left to end the threat.

In the USC fifth, Brewster led off with a double off the fence in left and with two outs, Metropoulos hit a 2-1 pitch by Romanczuk over the left field fence to give the Trojans a four-run lead. It was Metropoulos' eighth homer this season. Kennedy hit John Mayberry, Jr., in the bottom of the fifth to load the bases, but Lucy hit a slow dribbler back to the mound with Kennedy underhanding the ball to first for the third out.

RBI singles by Blake Sharpe and Hart added two more runs in the seventh for the Trojans, followed by an RBI single by Clement in the eighth.

The series continues tomorrow at 1 p.m. and concludes on Sunday (May 23), also at 1 p.m. Both games can be heard live, along with Gametracker live stats, at
