Cal Ties For Seventh at NCAA West Regional

SUNRIVER, Ore. - The California men's golf team tied for seventh with Toledo Saturday at the NCAA West Regional at the Sunriver Resort at the Crosswater Club, earning one of 10 spots from the regional to the NCAA Championships. This year's national championship will be staged June 1-4 in Hot Springs, Va.

The Golden Bears fired their highest score in the final round at 16-over-par 304, for a three-day total of 882 (+18), but it was enough to give Cal its first berth to the NCAA Championships since 2000.

Top-seeded UCLA trailed ninth-seed New Mexico a majority of the day before pulling out a one-stroke victory - 865 (+1) to 866. The Bruins fired a final round of 294, while the Lobos shot a 296. Arizona placed third at 872. Also advancing to NCAAs were Arizona State (873), BYU and USC at 881, Pepperdine (884) and Washington (885).

Peter Tomasulo and Scott Carlyle led Cal at two-over 74 on day three. Tomasulo was the Bears' top golfer, tying for sixth at two-under 214. In Friday's second round, all five Cal golfers posted scores at par or below.

Next best for the Bears was Jeff Hood, tying for 33rd at 222 following a 77 today. Cal's other results included J.R. Ruda tying for 47th at 224, Michael Wilson tying for 70th (228) and Carlyle tying for 88th (231). Ruda opened the final round with an eagle on the par-4 first hole.

UCLA's Travis Johnson and Arizona's Chris Nallen shared the individual title at five-under-par 211 following equal rounds of 72. UNLV's Ryan Moore was third at 212.
