Hofstra Defeats Stanford In NCAA Softball Regional Action

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford, Calif. - The seventh-seeded Hofstra softball team defeated the No. 1-seed Stanford, 1-0, this afternoon at the NCAA Regional at the Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium. The two teams will meet today at 3:30 p.m. to decide who will go the the College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla.

The Pride improve to 38-20 on the year while the Cardinal drop to 46-17 overall.

It was a pitcher's dual between Stanford's Dana Sorensen and Hofstra's Adrienne Clark for six and a half innings of play.

In the bottom of the seventh Ashley Lane was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Hofstra's Tara Ulrich broke up a no-hitter with a single to right field as Lane advanced to second. Hailey Clark walked to load the bases. Lisa Torres was hit by a pitch as Lane came home to score the winning run.

Stanford's Katherine Hoffman went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Cardinal. Leah Nelson went 1-for-2 with a double while Jessica Allister and Jackie Rinehart each collected one hit.

Hofstra's Tara Ulrich went 1-for-2 on the day while Lisa Torres collected the lone RBI.

The Pride's Adrienne Clark (13-12) picked up the win for Hofstra, scattering five hits over seven innings of work. Stanford's Dana Sorensen (31-10) took the loss, allowing one run on one hit over 6.2 innings with nine strikeouts.

Sorensen broke the single season record for strikeouts (332) with her nine K's today as she now has 339 in 2004.
