May 23, 2004
SEATTLE, WA - Ryan McCarthy hit two home runs, including a game-winner in the top of the eighth, his 12th of the year, to lead UCLA (31-26, 12-9) to a 4-3 win over 14th-ranked Washington (34-18-1, 15-9) on Sunday afternoon at Husky Ballpark.
UCLA would take an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. A one-out fielder's choice from Jarrad Page would bring Matt Thayer across home plate. Thayer had singled to left field to lead-off the inning.
In the top of the third, the Bruins stretched their lead to two runs when Ryan McCarthy hit a solo home run over the left field fence. It was the junior shortstop's 11th home run of the season.
After the Huskies posted a run in the bottom of the third, first baseman Brandon Averill hit a solo home run to push the Bruin lead back to two runs in the top of the fifth. It was Averill's eighth round tripper of the season.
Washington scored one run in the bottom of the fifth and would tie the score in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI single from Ben Johnson. At the end of six innings, the game was tied at 3-3.
The Bruins will head to Corvallis, Oregon next weekend to wrap-up their regular season schedule. Friday night's game against Oregon State is set for 5:00 p.m.
