Arizona's Dianne Hollands Advances to the Second Round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championships

Athens, Ga. - The No. 11-ranked junior Dianne Hollands won her match in the opening round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championships Monday, May 24. Hollands is the lone singles player representing Arizona in the singles championships. She will also team up with fellow junior Maja Mlakar to compete in the NCAA Women's Tennis Doubles Championships starting Tuesday, May 25.
Hollands entered the tournament as a 9-16 seed. In her first round match she took on Texas A&M's No. 20-ranked senior Jessica Roland. Hollands ended Roland's singles college career as she won in two sets, 6-0, 6-2. The junior from Dunedin, New Zealand will next take on Tulsa's Daniela Muscolino in second round action Tuesday, May 25. Muscolino currently holds the No. 51 ranking in the ITA rankings. She has a 23-8 record with her most impressive win coming against Oregon's No. 12 ranked Daria Panova on April 2.
The No. 5 ranked duo of Hollands and Mlakar received the No. 4 seed of the doubles championships. In first round action they will take on No. 8 ranked Maja Kovacek and Sandy Lukowski from the University of New Mexico. These two pairs met when the Lobos traveled to Tucson on Feb. 14. Mlakar and Hollands easily defeated Kovacek and Lukowsi, 8-1. The duo's only win against a top-20 ranked opponent came on May 2, as they defeated BYU's Barbara Zahnova and Sofia Holden.
Competition at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia will resume tomorrow morning.
