SAO PAULO, Brazil - Wednesday evening we concluded our spring soccer with a 1-1 tie to Santa Clara. Happy with our hard work, the team finished up with soccer and is now gearing up for finals. We, on the other hand, were frantically packing in anticipation for our trip to Brazil with the U-21 National Team.
On Thursday we began our journey to Brazil that would last an astonishing 28 hours. We flew from San Jose and met the team in Houston. We hopped on another flight that would take us to Sao Paulo, Brazil in anticipation of a short layover before one last flight to our final destination of Iguassu Falls. Upon arrival in Sao Paulo, we were a bit disappointed to hear that we would not continue our journey to Iguassu Falls, but would instead stay within the vicinity of Sao Paulo.
After a bite to eat and several hours of waiting for our bus, we were happy to finally get out of the airport. Three hours and a bunch of queasy stomachs later, we arrived at our hotel in a location yet to be discovered. Nervous about our last minute accommodations, we were pleased with what we arrived at. We are staying in Oscar Inn Sports Eco Resort, supposedly built by a former Brazilian national team player. It was set up to prepare teams for competition. It is very convenient because our training fields are right on site and are surrounded by the beautiful Brazilian landscape.
Upon arrival last night, we squeezed in a quick training. This is when we learned what exactly was going on with our schedule. Apparently we did not travel to our initial destination due to security issues. For similar reasons, China's U-21 team decided not to come. Therefore, our game schedule has been changed around a bit. As of now, we will be playing Sunday, Monday, Thursday and Saturday. Instead of playing China, we will play the Brazilian national team twice.
We fell asleep last night to a very heavy downpour and to our amazement, when we awoke this morning it was a beautiful day. We hope the weather continues to be great and we are looking forward to our match tomorrow. We will keep you posted.
