No. 1-seed Kops-Jones Advances at NCAA Championships

ATHENS, Ga. - Cal senior Raquel Kops-Jones advanced to the second round of the 2004 NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championships after defeating Illinois' Jennifer McGaffigan, 6-1, 6-3, in the first round today at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. Kops-Jones, the No. 1 ranked player in collegiate tennis, is the top seed in the 64-player field battling for the 2004 NCAA singles title. With the victory, Kops-Jones is now 29-7 overall this season.
Kops-Jones will play Michigan's Michelle DaCosta in a second-round match tomorrow. DaCosta defeated Tennessee's Sabite Maharaj, 6-3, 6-1, today to advance to the second round. This is the third consecutive year Kops-Jones has participated in the NCAA singles championships; last year, she advanced into the quarterfinals.
Cal freshman Sasha Podkolzina, playing in her first NCAA singles championships, took Florida's No. 5-seeded Alexis Gordon to three sets before falling in a first-round match. Podkolzina won the first set, 7-6, but Gordon came back to win the next two sets, 6-4, 6-2. Podkolzina ends her season with a 12-8 overall record.
