May 24, 2004
ATHENS, Ga. - USC women's tennis junior Luana Magnani and freshman Anca Anastasiu both dropped their opening round matches on Monday afternoon at the 2004 NCAA Singles Championships being held at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the Georgia campus.
Magnani, who was ranked 15th in the final regular season ITA poll, jumped out to an early lead against Florida's 19th-ranked Jennifer Magley. She captured the first set with ease, 6-3, but Magley quickly turned the table. The Florida freshman bounced back to win the next two sets for a final 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory.
Anastasiu fell to fellow Pac-10 player and 17th-ranked Dea Sumantri of Washington, also in three sets. This time it was Anastasiu who battled back after dropping the first set and evened the match with a 6-3 win in the second. Sumantri eventually pulled out a final 6-4 victory in a close third set.
Postseason play is not over yet for the Women of Troy. Magnani and doubles partner Carine Vermeulen will play the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championship on Tuesday, May 25. The pair will face 19th-ranked Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis of North Carolina at 2 p.m. EST.
