Gearing Up For The IRAs

In the week leading up to the IRA National Championships, members of the Cal Crew are highlighted. Each oarsman discusses some of their favorite things, and what they do in preparation for a race. Today, senior co-captain Rob Austerman is profiled.

Austerman, and integrative biology major, serves as the team captain along with senior coxswain Shawn Ghatan. He currently rows in the two seat in the varsity eight boat. This year, he helped the varsity eight win its sixth straight Copley Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic, and capture the silver medal at the Pac-10 championships.

Q: How did you get involved in crew?A: A friend in high school recruited me for the local clubrowing team.

Q: Why did you choose to come to Cal?A: For the academics and for rowing.

Q: At the beginning of the season, what is the one thingyou most look forward to? What is the thing you dread the most?A: The thing I most look forward to is the racing. Thething that I dread the most is midterms and finals.

Q: What is your pre-race routine/superstition?A: No solid food at least three hours before the race, eata lot of Gu energy gel, drink a lot of water, stretch, and wearmy good luck socks.

Q: What are the last 3 CD's you bought?A: Ben Harper, Social Distortion, and Jay-Z

Q: If you were stranded on a desert island, who would youbring with you, and what 3 things would you want to take?A: Any of the winners from the Survivor show just so I could kickthem off my island. And I would bring my sunglasses, a lifetimesupply of sunscreen, and a solar powered XM radio.

Q: What is your greatest achievement in crew?A: Upon others the thing that I will remember the most, is beatingthe university of Washington in Seattle. It was my first race inthe varsity boat and it was my last chance to beat Washington ontheir home course.

Q: What do you do in your spare time?A: Homework

Q: If you could trade places with anyone (celebrity or not)who would it be? Why?A: I would trade places with Joe or Gavin Maloof because they own asuccessful casino and the greatest basketball team in the country.

Q: Who/what inspires you?A: The possibility of failure inspires me to perform in all situations

Q: What is the one song/type of music that you think should bebanned from the erg room?A: R&B
