Liu and Barnes Remain in NCAA Singles Championship

ATHENS, Ga. - Stanford sophomores Amber Liu and Alice Barnes will compete in the Round of 16 at the 2004 NCAA Singles Championship at the University of Georgia after tallying wins on Tuesday.

Liu, the 2003 NCAA Singles Champion, downed 17th-ranked Dea Sumantri of Washington 6-2, 6-4 in the Round of 32. Liu, seeded No. 4 in the Tournament, will go against Sacramento State's Margarita Karnaukhova in the next round on Wednesday.

No. 10-ranked Barnes took out Karin Coetzee of Wake Forest in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 to advance to the Round of 16, where she will face third-seeded Jelena Pandzic of Fresno State.

Freshman Theresa Logar was fell out of competition after losing a hard-fought match 6-4, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) to Vanderbilt's Audra Falk. Logar wrapped up her initial collegiate season with a 38-4 overall singles record.

The top-ranked Stanford duo of Lauren Barnikow and Erin Burdette were upset in doubles action on Tuesday. The Wiliam & Mary tandem of Megan Muth and Amy Wei eliminated Barnikow and Burdette 2-6, 7-6, 6-2 in the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championship.
