May 26, 2004

COMO, Italy - The Washington State women's basketball team finished the competitive portion of its Italy tour Wednesday (May 26) as it fell to Pool Comense 72-69.

The Cougars finished the tour's four-game schedule with a 2-2 record. In its final game, WSU may have gone against its toughest opponent yet in Pool Comense. The professional team had just recently captured Italy's national championship.

Despite the high level of competition, the Cougars stayed with their opponent up to the final buzzer.

Down 56-52 entering the final quarter, WSU began the fourth period with a 9-0 run to take a 61-56 lead.

Six consecutive points gave Pool Comense the lead once again but WSU would not go away.

The Cougars had a chance to tie in the final 10 seconds but were unable to get a shot off on their final possession.

Adriane Ferguson led a group of three Cougars who hit double figures in scoring with 17 points. Bianca McCall (16 points) and Emma Joneby (12 points) completed the trio.

Kate Benz added eight points and 11 rebounds for WSU.

Cougars Take Boat Tour of Lake Como

Prior to playing their final game of the tour, the Cougars spent Wednesday morning taking a boat tour of Lake Como.

During the boat ride to the town of Bellagio, which is 19 miles northeast of Como, the team enjoyed seeing the numerous villages set all along the lake. One village had a waterfall set right in its heart.

Three miles north of Como, the team was able to see the Villa d'Este, the legendary resort in the town of Cernobbio. The resort, which was completed in 1615, has welcomed Europe's rich and famous from Napoleon to the Duchess of Windsor.

Another interesting site the team saw was actor George Clooney's residence, which is on the lake's shoreline.

After an hour the Cougars reached their destination of Bellagio. Upon arrival, the team had an hour to enjoy the shops and dining options in the town.

After an hour-long ride back to Como, the team had some time to enjoy the city before departing for the game at 5:30 p.m.

One day remains in the team's tour of Italy. Milan is on the docket for Thursday (May 27). The team flies out of Milan Friday morning and is due back in Pullman late Friday night.
