Corkery And Warburg Advance At NCAA Championships
May 27, 2004
TULSA, Okla. - Stanford University men's tennis standouts, KC Corkery and Sam Warburg, collected straight sets wins to advance to the round of 16 at the 2004 NCAA Singles Championship, Thursday afternoon at the University of Tulsa.
After a grueling three-set come-from-behind win yesterday, Warburg, the No. 8 seed, cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Alex Menichini of TCU.
'I got off to a good start and I was hanging in with the wind a little more than I think he (Menichini) was,' said Warburg. 'I'm excited (about advancing to the round of 16). This is what we've been playing our whole year for, this tournament, to do well here. Hopefully, I'll feel fresh tomorrow and I'll be ready to go.'
Warburg, ranked No. 8 in the latest ITA poll, will face No. 20 ranked Gabor Zoltan Pelva of Auburn tomorrow for the right to advance to the quarterfinals.
Corkery, originally selected as an alternate for the NCAA Singles Championship, registered a 6-2, 6-1 win over local favorite Dustin Taylor of Tulsa.
'I started out really well in both sets. I just feel like I was hitting the ball well,' said Corkery. 'I got a couple of lucky breaks on a couple of serves. It just gave me a lot of confidence. I had a chance last year to go to the round of 16 as a freshman and I didn't expect to do that but I didn't feel like I gave a very good effort last year. I lost to a very good player but I think I had psyched myself out mentally beforehand. This year, I,m playing well. I have a lot of confidence against anybody in the draw and I need to go out and play well.'
Corkery, ranked No. 65, will take on No. 29 ranked Nicholas Monroe of North Carolina in the round of 16.
Corkery and Warburg teamed up to advance to the round of 16 in the doubles championship with a come-from-behind, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, win over David Goulet and Michael Kogan of Tulane. The duo will now face Pac-10 rival Roger Matalonga and Colin O'Grady of Arizona in the round of 16.
