Softball's Vanessa Iapala Named Second Team All-American

May 27, 2004

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Oregon State sophomore first baseman Vanessa Iapala earned second team All-America honors late Wednesday night, as was announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) in conjunction with the opening ceremonies of the 2004 Women's College World Series.

Iapala is just the third player in Oregon State softball history (four-time All-American Tarrah Beyster and third team selection Brynnen Guthrie) to garner All-America status since the Beavers joined the Pacific-10 Conference in 1987.

A native of San Diego, CA, Iapala led the Beavers with a .333 batting average, 71 hits, 46 RBI, and 14 doubles. She earned first team All-Pacific Region honors and was a second team All-Pacific-10 Conference selection.

As a sophomore, Iapala already ranks in the Oregon State career Top 10 in three different batting categories (RBI, doubles, home runs). She belted a pair of game-winning home runs for the Beavers on the season. Iapala hit a walk-off grand slam in the eighth inning against Utah (Feb. 13) and sent OSU into the NCAA Regional Championship game with a two-out seventh inning walk-off home run against No. 6 ranked Michigan (May 23).
