Arizona Takes First Game Of Pac-10 Series With 7-6 Win

LOS ANGELES - Left fielder Trevor Crowe went 3-for-5 with two RBI and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the eighth as the Arizona Wildcats defeated the USC Trojans, 7-6, in Pac-10 Conference action at Dedeaux Field. Crowe was a single away from hitting for the cycle as he hit a double, triple and home run.

Arizona starter Koley Kolberg (8-6) threw his fourth complete game of the season, allowing six runs on 12 hits with three walks and a strikeout.

The Wildcats, which are chasing a possible NCAA Tournament berth, are now 29-23-1 on the season and 11-11 in Pac-10 play. USC falls to 23-31 overall and 9-13 in conference.

USC freshman Ian Kennedy allowed four runs on six hits in seven innings of work. Kennedy walked two and struck out seven on the evening.

Crowe hit his fifth home run of the season with a two-run shot to right center in the third for a 2-0 Arizona lead. The Trojans answered in the bottom of the third with three runs as Daniel Perales and Billy Hart led off with back-to-back singles. Second baseman Blake Sharpe doubled to right, scoring Perales, followed by an RBI ground out from catcher Jeff Clement. Michael Moon put the Trojans ahead with an RBI single to left.

With two outs in the sixth, Arizona shortstop Jason Donald hit a two-run single to left to put the Wildcats ahead, 4-3. USC answered again in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by designated hitter Cyle Hankerd.

In the top of the eighth, Crowe led off with a triple to left center off reliever Michael Friedman (2-2) and scored on Friedman's wild pitch on the next batter. The Wildcats added two more runs on a sacrifice fly by designated Richard Mercado and error by USC first baseman Joey Metropoulos during a rundown during a steal attempt.

The Trojans rallied again in the eighth when Jon Brewster hit his sixth home run of the season with a solo shot. Hart added an RBI groundout to make it a 7-6 advantage for the Wildcats, but Kolberg retired the next four batters to close out the victory.
