Bruins Tied with USC at NCAA West Region Championships

Northridge, CA - At the conclusion of the first day of competition at the NCAA West Region Championships, the Bruins are on their way to defending their NCAA West Region team titles. After five scored events, the Bruin men are tied with USC with 37 points after five events.
In today's final events, senior co-captain Dan Ames won two events. He defended his shot put title and won the hammer thrown. After prelims on the track, the UCLA men have qualified 10 individuals for tomorrow's running finals.
The NCAA West Region Championships will conclude tomorrow, May 29. The first field event, the men's javelin, will begin at 8:30 AM. The first running event, the women's 4x100m relay final, will begin at 3:30 PM.

High Jump - No entries.
Hammer - Senior co-captain Dan Ames won the hammer title with a throw of 206-5 (62.92m). Sophomore Jake Knight threw 186-6 (56.85m). And, redshirt freshman Brian Ruziecki was 21st with a throw of 174-4 (53.15m).
Shot Put - In the shot put, Ames won his second event of the day. He threw 64-3.25 (19.59m) to defend his title. Silverman was second with a personal best throw of 64-0.50 (19.52m). Knight was eighth throwing 58-10.25 (17.94m). And, Ruziecki was 11th with a throw of 57-5.75 (17.52m).
Long Jump - Senior co-captain Juaune Armon finished second with a jump of 25-0 (7.62m, w: 0.6).
5,000m - No entries.
4x100m Relay - The Bruin squad of Matt Bruno, Mario Bassani, Jonathan Williams and Craig Everhart finished fourth in heat one in 40.17. The Bruins ran the fifth fastest time of the day and advance to tomorrow's final.
1500m - Junior Jon Rankin won the first heat of the 1500m in 3:44.75, the fastest time of the day. Junior Ben Aragon was fourth in the second heat in 3:46.65, eighth overall. The top-four finishers in each heat automatically qualify for tomorrow's final.
110m Hurdles - Junior Tony Golston won the second heat of the 110m hurdles in 13.87 (w: 1.4), the fastest time of the day. Jonathan Williams finished fourth in the first heat in 14.53 (w: 1.4), sixth fastest time of the day. Both advance to tomorrow's final.
400m - In the first heat of the 400m, the Bruins went one-two. Sophomore Craig Everhart won in 46.24, the second fastest time of the day. Junior Denye' Versher finished second in a personal best 46.56, the sixth fastest time overall. Both Everhart and Versher qualified for Saturday's final.
100m - Sophomore Matt Bruno finished fourth in heat two of the 100m dash in 10.63w (w: 2.9). It was the eighth fastest time of the day and qualifies for tomorrow's finals.
800m - Senior Nick Thornton finished second in heat one in 1:50.24, the fourth fastest time overall. He advances to Saturday's final.
400m Hurdles - The Bruins had the two fastest times of the day. In the first heat, Jonathan Williams won in 50.97. In heat two, sophomore Matt Willis was fourth in 52.37. And, sophomore Brandon Johnson won the third heat in 51.38. Williams had the fastest time of the day and Johnson was the second fastest of the day. Both Williams and Johnson advance to tomorrow's final.
