Cougar Rowing Completes First Day at NCAA Championships

May 28, 2004

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - The Washington State University second varsity eight finished third in its heat to highlight the Cougars' performance during day one of the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships on Lake Natoma.

WSU started the 2000 meters race strong and was second to heat winner Washington (6:46.7) at the halfway mark. California (6:48.3) inched past WSU (6:51.0) with 500 meters to go and held off the Cougars for second place.

Washington, along with heat one winner Brown, advanced to Sunday's Grand Final (places 1-6) at 11:15 a.m. The Cougars, along with the other nine teams at the NCAA Championships, will compete in one of two repechage races Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. The top two in each race will advance to the Grand Final while the remaining six schools will compete in the Petite Final (places 7-12) Sunday at 11 a.m.

The WSU varsity four finished fifth in its heat with a time of 7:43.3. Virginia won the heat in 7:28.9. The Cougars will compete in one of two repechage races Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m. Like the second varsity eight, a first or second place finish would advance the Cougars to Sunday's Grand Final.

The Cougar varsity eight, No. 17 in the final regular season US Rowing/NCAA Division I Coaches Poll, failed in two chances to reach the semifinals.

WSU finished fifth in its morning heat, won by Brown in 6:44.1. The Cougars' time was 7:19.7. In the afternoon, the Cougars were third after the first 500 meters, but fell back to a seventh place finish in a time of 7:42.9. Harvard won the race with a time of 7:23.8.

The varsity eight will take part in an 11 a.m. race Saturday to determine places 13-16. The Cougars will compete against Michigan State, Texas and Wisconsin. Since three at-large varsity eight boats not eligible for the team championship, Notre Dame, USC and Tennessee, advanced to the semifinals, a win in Saturday's race would give the Cougars 10th place points toward the team championship.
