Goerl Pitches Four-Hit Shutout as UCLA Defeats LSU, 2-0, at the World Series

May 28, 2004

OKLAHOMA CITY - The UCLA softball team (45-9) turned in its seventh straight Women's College World Series victory on Friday afternoon in Oklahoma City, defeating third-seeded LSU by a score of 2-0. The Bruins scored both of their runs in the top of the first inning as Keira Goerl pitched a four-hit shutout for the win.

The Bruins started hot in the top of the first inning, putting together a one-out rally AS Andrea Duran started with an infield single and went to second on a single through the left side by Lisa Dodd. Each runner would advance two bases on a single to right center by Stephanie Ramos, and Dodd came home on a single by Jodie Legaspi to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead after one at-bat.

Meanwhile, Keira Goerl opened the game in the circle by pitching three perfect innings before giving up consecutive hits to open the LSU fourth. LaDonia Hughes broke up the perfect game with a lead-off bunt single and advanced on a single by Lauren Castle. Julie Wiese then grounded into a fielders choice with the out at second base, recording the second out of the inning, before Leigh Ann Danos grounded out to end the threat.

The Tigers would rally again in the sixth inning, as Camille Harris led off the inning with an infield single, bringing LaDonia Hughes to the plate. Hughes popped up a bunt that was nearly caught by a diving Andrea Duran, but Duran was unable to make the play and Hughes was quick to take second base on the play for a bunt double, giving LSU runners on second and third with no outs. Goerl responded, however, striking out Lauren Castle and Leslie Klein before getting Julie Wiese to ground out to end the inning, preserving the 2-0 UCLA lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Danos led off the inning by drawing a walk and was replaced by pinch runner Lauren Uhle. Goerl then struck out Stephanie Hill, Goerl's fourth 'K' of the game, for the first out of the inning before Lauren Delahoussaye popped out and Sara Fitzgerald became Goerl's fifth strikeout victim on the day to end the game. Goerl finished with five strikeouts and one walk while pitching a four-hit shutout for her 29th win of the season.

UCLA earns a day off on Saturday and advances to play in Sunday's semifinal (10 am PT, May 30, ESPN), while LSU will return to action on Saturday (May 29) to play either Washington or Florida State at 6 pm PT on ESPN.
