NCAA West Regionals: Qualifiers Keep Coming

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - With the first day of NCAA West Regionals complete, the California Golden Bears got a sense of which elite athletes would make the national meet, which will take place in Austin, Texas. in two weeks. Sophomore Teak Wilburn assured himself of both a spot at nationals and a high seed with his top finish in the high jump, 7-02.25 (2.19m).

'I look forward to a lot of tickets on being punchd to Austin tomorrow,' head coach Chris Huffins said.

Other outstanding performances came from sophomore Antonette Carter who finished second (23.77) in the 200-meter dash to the nation's top 200-meter runner, San Diego State's Tonette Dyer in the preliminaries. Carter also aided the women's 4x100-meter relay team, joined by sophomores Osarhiemen Omwanghe and Tiffany Johnson and junior Shannan Hawes, who finished second with a time of 44.52.

Senior triple-jumper Bruce Giron surprised with a personal-best 51.47 for fifth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles preliminaries. Senior Ahmad Wright finished ninth in the event, 52.33.

'We did a great job in our qualifying procedures with a minimal number of mishaps. One pleasant surprise was Bruce Giron's PR in the 400-meter hurdles, he has poised himself to go to nationals,' Huffins added. 'We may qualify more people than ever before.'

Throwers Sheni Russell and Rhuben Williams assured themselves of a trip to nationals with top five finishes in the finals of their events. Russell, a senior, placed third in the discus 178-06 (54.41m). Williams, a junior who has also qualified in the men's discus, seized third in the shot put (64-00.25, 19.51m) and sixth in the hammer(192-09, 58.75m). Senior Amin Nikfar finished seventh in the event, leaving open the possibility of a wildcard selection to the national meet, with his mark of 59-08.25 (18.19m).

Senior Deanna Slaton finished third in the 400-meter hurdles preliminaries. Sophomore Osarhiemen Omwanghe finished eighth in the 100-meter hurdles preliminaries at 13.60 seconds.

The men's 4x100-meter relay team, comprised of senior Nick Mazur, freshman Darren Woods, and juniors Toby Atawo and Ricci Dula, finished seventh in the preliminaries matching the team's season-best at 40.38 seconds.
