Postlewait Wins Pitchers' Duel, 3-2

May 28, 2004

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Jake Postlewait pitched a four-hitter for his 11th win of the season as Oregon State beat UCLA 3-2 in Pacific-10 baseball Friday evening at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Tony Calderon had a two-run homer and added a double for the Beavers (31-20 overall, 10-12 Pacific-10).

OSU and UCLA (31-27, 12-10) continue their series Saturday at 1 p.m. and then wrap up the regular season Sunday at 1 p.m.; both games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240) and www.osubeavers.com. The Beavers likely need at least two wins in the series and possibly three to be selected for the NCAA Regionals.

On Friday, Postlewait outdueled Bruin righthander Casey Janssen as the teams combined for just seven hits. The senior lefthander improved his record to 11-3 this season, tying him for the second-highest number of wins in a season in Oregon State's 95-year baseball history behind Scott Christman's 14 victories in 1993. The senior lefthander walked one and struck out four in recording his first complete game of the season as he saved his best for his last home start.

'That's a good way of putting it,' Postlewait said. 'I was a little more juiced up - how can you not be? The sun did shine for us, and I took it as the last one - at home, anyway. Everything was working ... I don't throw slow and I don't throw hard; I'm right in the middle. I hit my spots, and that makes it hard enough.'

Postlewait faced the minimum number of hitters through 6 1/3 innings, allowing only singles by Billy Susdorf in the second inning and Matt Thayer in the fourth; they were erased on a double play and a runner caught stealing. After OSU took a 3-0 lead on Calderon's homer in the bottom of the sixth inning, UCLA got its only runs in the top of the seventh when Thayer walked with one out and Ryan McCarthy homered to left-centerfield.

The Bruins put the tying run aboard on Preston Griffin's one-out single in the top of the ninth. After Thayer fouled out to catcher Paul Richie, McCarthy again strode to the plate; Postlewait induced a grounder to third baseman Shea McFeely for the final out.

'I think that's the best he's been in the two years that I've played with him,' Calderon said of Postlewait. 'He looked outstanding. He didn't miss a spot, it seemed like - he was in and out. You're allowed to make a bad pitch every once in a while; I think that (homer by McCarthy) was his only bad pitch of the game and unfortunately the guy capitalized on the bad pitch and hit it out of the yard. But he was very good today.'

Calderon may be another case of saving his best for last. After struggling at the plate all season, the senior shortstop has driven in 18 runs in his last dozen games and has homered four times in OSU's last five games.

'I don't know what's gotten into me,' said Calderon, who is batting .450 in Oregon State's last five games. 'I'm just a little more confident when I walk up there. I feel obligated, actually, to produce now that it's in the clutch and now that something's on the line.'

OSU picked up its first run in the bottom of the third inning without a hit, using three Bruin errors to take a 1-0 lead. Calderon doubled in the fourth but was stranded at third base; with two out in the fifth, Aaron Mathews singled through the left side and then Calderon drove a full-count pitch over the left-centerfield fence to make it 3-0.

'Off the bat, I didn't think it was going to go out,' Calderon said. 'I thought it was going to go off the wall so I ran it out like it was going to be a double. When I saw it go over, that's when it hit and I got kind of fired up.'

Janssen took a tough loss to fall to 9-4 on the season, allowing just three hits in his seven innings of work while walking two and striking out five. In their past four games, the Beavers have won when getting just five hits in a 3-2 victory at Washington State and three hits on Friday night against UCLA; OSU hasn't committed an error in those four games.

'That just goes to show you that if you get good pitching and good defense, you've got a great chance to win,' Calderon said. 'Hopefully we get good pitching Saturday and play solid D, and we'll come out with another W.'
