Beavers Beaten By Bruins

May 29, 2004

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State's hopes of reaching the NCAA Regionals were dealt a blow when the Beavers lost to UCLA 12-2 in Pacific-10 baseball Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The Beavers (31-21 overall, 10-13 Pac-10) saw the Bruins (32-27, 13-10) score seven runs in the last two innings to break the game open after OSU had missed out on a chance at a big inning in the bottom of the seventh.

Oregon State and UCLA decide their series and wrap up the regular season on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the OSU ballpark; the game can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240) and www.osubeavers.com. The Beavers, who had won the series opener 3-2 on Friday evening, likely need a win to have any chance of making the 64-team field for the NCAA Regionals, which will be announced Monday.

On Saturday, OSU's recent struggle to score runs continued. The Beavers left 10 runners on base, including six in scoring position, and the Bruins finally broke through against Oregon State's pitching in the final innings.

'There was some frustration on offense because we left so many guys on base early in the game,' Oregon State assistant coach Dan Spencer said. 'In the seventh inning, we had a chance to get right back in the game and the wind came out of our sails when we didn't get a hit with the bases loaded ... then we didn't do a good enough job at the end of the game on the mound to give us an opportunity.'

Down 5-1 going into the bottom of the seventh, OSU loaded the bases with none out as Shea McFeely doubled off Bruin reliever Bryan Beck, Chris Kunda walked and then Adam Simon came on to pitch for UCLA and walked Tyler Graham. Jacoby Ellsbury chopped into a fielder's choice that retired Graham at second and plated one run to make it 5-2, then Tony Calderon walked to reload the bases.

Simon struck out designated hitter Chris Campos swinging for the second out and got Aaron Mathews to fly out to centerfield to end the inning with OSU still trailing by three. The Bruins answered the next inning with Chris Denove's two-run homer off OSU reliever Nathan Pendley and added one more run on three walks issued by Andy Baldwin and a fielder's choice to go in front 8-2. UCLA tacked on four more runs on five hits and a walk in the ninth against relievers Jake McCormick and Ben Rowe.

'Unfortunately, no matter how you cut the cake, we haven't scored enough runs to consistently win in three weeks,' Spencer said. 'I think for the most part our pitchers have gotten after it pretty good; today wasn't a good day for them. We didn't get a hit when we needed to, even though we had some guys have some great at-bats, just not at the right time ... we just couldn't get a ball to drop, or get out of the house, and close doesn't count.'

UCLA had turned a 1-1 tie into a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning on Billy Susdorf's two-out, two-run double to left center off OSU starter Dallas Buck. The Bruins pushed that lead to 5-1 on Brett McMillan's homer and an unearned run against Buck in the top of the seventh before turning back OSU's rally in the bottom of the inning.

The Bruins had gone up 1-0 in the top of the first inning, but OSU evened the score in the bottom of the inning when Graham led off with a single and scored when Jacoby Ellsbury bounced a double just inside first base. The Beavers short-circuited a chance to take the lead when Ellsbury was picked off of second base by UCLA starter David Johnson.

Buck took the loss to drop to 3-6 this season, going 6 1/3 innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits and one walk while striking out eight, one short of his career high. It was the fifth time in eight starts that Buck had gone at least 6 1/3 innings.

Cole Gillespie matched his career-high with three hits, including a double; it was the second time in OSU's last three games that Gillespie had collected three hits. Graham was 2-for-3 for the Beavers, his third straight two-hit game.
