Cal Qualifies Nine at NCAA West Regional

May 29, 2004

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Bears built on yesterday's success at the NCAA West Regional by qualifying several more athletes on the second and final day of competition. In all, the Bears have qualified nine athletes automatically and more may be taken as wildcard selections. Adding to yesterday's qualifiers, sophomore Teak Wilburn, junior Rhuben Williams, and senior Sheni Russell, are sophomores Antonette Carter, Osarhiemen Omwanghe and Tiffany Johnson, junior Shannan Hawes, and seniors Deanna Slaton and Vincent Ibia.

'I think what we've shown is that we are rapidly moving up the ladder, we are a boatload better than we were,' head coach Chris Huffins said. 'We are excited about what we are going to do in Austin in two weeks and we are looking forward to the challenges that may come.'

Ibia gave the field highlight of the day with his personal best in the triple jump, 52-00 (15.85m) for fourth place.

Meanwhile, Carter took over the track, replicating her school-record of 23.33 in the 200 meters for second place and an automatic bid at nationals. She also anchored the women's 4x100-meter relay team, working with Omwanghe, Johnson, and Hawes, for a fourth place finish in 44.55 seconds.

Slaton took the fifth slot for nationals with her 58.25 time in the 400 meter hurdles. Slaton ranks second all-time at Cal.

'We had a great meet. We had the two teams (men and women) in the top ten in our region,' Huffins added. 'We have quite a large contingent going to nationals. After the final list comes out, we may have our biggest group ever.

The NCAA West Regional is a scored meet and Cal proved it could be a team threat at nationals finishing among the top ten teams in the region. The men finished seventh with 34 points and the women tenth with 25 points.

The NCAA Championships start June 9 at the University of Texas at Austin.
