Trojans Win It In The Ninth For 9-8 Win Over Arizona

LOS ANGELES - Junior first baseman Joey Metropoulos went 3-for-5, including a game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the ninth, as the USC Trojans defeated the Arizona Wildcats, 9-8, in Pac-10 Conference action at Dedeaux Field. Metropoulos hit two doubles and added his ninth home run of the season with a solo shot in the second.
USC improves to 24-31 on the season and 10-13 in Pac-10 play while Arizona falls to 29-24-1 overall and 11-12 in the Pac-10.
The Wildcats held a 4-1 lead after six innings. USC head coach Mike Gillespie was ejected in the sixth inning, but the Trojans responded with six runs in the seventh inning.
In the seventh, the first six Trojan batters reached base safely. USC loaded the bases against Arizona starter Kevin Guyette before reliever Mark Melancon entered the game. Melancon gave up a single and two walks, including a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 4-4. Catcher Jeff Clement capped the scoring with an RBI single.
Both teams traded runs in the eighth, but the Wildcats rallied in the ninth with three runs. Jordan Brown hit an RBI double down the right field line to score Trevor Crowe. Moises Duran and Jason Donald followed with back-to-back sacrifice fly balls to tie the game, 8-8.
Freshman Hector Estrella led off the ninth with a single to left. Blake Sharpe hit a possible double play ground ball to short, but he beat out the throw from John Hardy at first. Clement walked to put runners at first and second before Metropoulos delivered a deep, one-out double to left center for the game-winner.
Metropoulos with 33 career home runs is now tied for sixth all time at USC with Mike Robertson (1989-91).
Senior Clayton Wentworth (6-2) was credited with the win, allowing four runs in two innings, while Arizona reliever Sean Jarrett took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season.
