Arizona Rallies Late For 7-6 Win Over USC

May 30, 2004

LOS ANGELES - Nick Hundley's three-run, go-ahead home run in the eighth gave the Arizona Wildcats a 7-6 victory over the USC Trojans in Pac-10 Conference action at Dedeaux Field. The Wildcats rallied from a five-run deficit to win the series and will wait to see if their season will continue when the 64-team NCAA Tournament brackets are announced tomorrow.

Hundley went 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Arizona finishes the regular season with a 30-24-1 and a 12-12 mark in Pac-10 play while USC concludes the season with a 24-32 overall record, finishing 11-13 in Pac-10 play.

Wildcat starter John Meloan improved to a perfect 8-0 on the season, going 7 1/3 innings and allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits. Koley Kolberg earned his first save of the season with 1 2/3 perfect innings.

USC honored four seniors prior to the game: outfielder Jon Brewster, infielder Michael Moon, pitcher Josh Rummonds and pitcher Clayton Wentworth.

Rummonds went seven innings for the Trojans, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

USC catcher Jeff Clement went 2-for-4 with five RBI.

In the bottom of the first, Blake Sharpe advanced to third when Meloan's pickoff attempt went left of the bag. Sharpe then scored on Clement's sacrifice fly to left.

The Trojans loaded the bases in the second against Meloan when Cyle Hankerd's RBI sacrifice fly made it a 2-0 USC lead. Moon walked to load the bases and Sharpe struck out for the second out. Clement hit a soft pop fly in shallow left field on a full count pitch, but Arizona third baseman Moises Duran was unable to make the catch as three runs scored. Clement was credited with a three-run double.

Arizona chipped away at USC's lead with a run in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Brown led off the sixth with a solo shot to right center, his ninth of the season. Down 6-3 in the eighth, Brown led off the inning with another solo shot with a home run to center. After back-to-back singles by Jason Donald and Richard Mercado, Hundley gave the Wildcats their first lead of the game with his second home run in as many games on a three-run shot to right center to make it 7-6.

After Moon hit a one-out double in the eighth, Kolberg retired Sharpe and Clement to end the threat. Kolberg made his second relief appearance of the season after throwing a complete game on Friday in Arizona's 7-6 victory.
