Beavers Lose Baseball Finale 11-6

May 30, 2004

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State ended the regular season with an 11-6 loss to UCLA in Pacific-10 baseball Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The loss leaves the Beavers (31-22 overall, 10-14 Pac-10) a longshot for being named to the 64-team field for the NCAA Regionals when the pairings are announced Monday.

On Sunday, OSU got back within 5-4 on Mike Lissman's three-run homer to left-centerfield in the bottom of the seventh inning. UCLA put the game away with five runs - four of them unearned - in the top of the eighth, including a three-run homer by Wes Whisler, who also pitched seven innings for the win.

'I think we had a chance to make some big plays in some key situations and we didn't do it,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'We had some runners in scoring position early and we could have capitalized on it and we didn't do that. I thought we had a real solid approach to Whisler and I thought we could have done some damage if we'd had put a couple bigger numbers on the board early ... we didn't get a big hit when we needed it.

'Then we fight back and we just didn't make the plays when we needed to, and that created some opportunities for them.'

OSU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Jacoby Ellsbury bunted for a single and went to third when Mike Lissman chopped a double over third base; Tony Calderon followed with a sacrifice fly to right to score Ellsbury but Lissman was thrown out trying to take third.

UCLA went in front 3-1 in the top of the second on Billy Susdorf's two-out, three-run homer off OSU starter Jonah Nickerson. The Bruins added another run on Chris Denove's two-out RBI single in the top of the third.

Oregon State threatened in the bottom of the fifth inning but had a runner get caught in a rundown trying to score from third on a groundball to the infield with one out, then had another runner thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

UCLA tacked on an unearned run off OSU reliever Kevin Gunderson in the top of the seventh before OSU rallied in the bottom of the inning. Chris Kunda singled with one out, Ellsbury walked with two out and then Lissman hit a one-ball, one-strike pitch from Whisler over the left-centerfield fence for his eighth homer of the year to make it 5-4.

Lissman was 2-for-3 for OSU while Ellsbury and Paul Richie were both 2-for-4. Nickerson took the loss to fall to 4-3 this season, as the freshman righthander went five innings and allowed four runs on six hits and four walks while striking out seven.

The afternoon marked the final home game for OSU seniors Calderon, Mike Hass, Matt Hernandez, Nathan Pendley, Jake Postlewait, Richie, Ben Rowe and Jared Sanders.
